Czech Comedy Classics: Who Wants to Kill Jessie?

(This article expired 18.06.2014.)

Date: 17 June 2014 7:00 PM, Venue: Bistro Bohem

On June 17, at 7 pm, Bistro Bohem will screen WHO WANTS TO KILL JESSIE? (Kdo chce zabít Jessii?) as part of the film and beer series featuring Czech comedy classics. The film follows an engineer and a scientist who develop a machine that can visualize dreams.

Who Wants to Kill Jessie? entered movie theaters in 1966. At a time when the supply of comics was more than scarce in then communist Czechslovakia, the film provided its audience with an original incoporation of plurimediality―a combination of comedy and comics, both when it comes to the movie's plot as well as mode of expression. An interesting couple―he is an engineer, she is a researcher― is confronted with an unexpected adventure when the worlds of comics and reality begin to intertwine.

About the Director:
Václav Vorlíček is an accomplished Czech film director born in Prague in 1930. After studying at Prague's FAMU (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) between 1951 and 1956, Vorlíček started working on his own movies in the 1960s. Who Wants to Kill Jessie? was Vorlíček's first movie that revealed the ascending director's potential. You Are a Widow, Sir, The Girl on the Broomstick, and How to Drown Dr. Mracek, the Lawyer belong to Vorlíček's most renowned movies.
