Concert: Phoenix from the Ashes

On April 28, 2014, at 6 pm, the Embassy of the Czech Republic presents Phoenix from the Ashes: Terezín in Words and Music featuring Judith Lynn Stillman (pianist and composer, The Julliard School, BM, MM and DMA) and Lori Phillips (soprano, The Metropolitan Opera) in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The program—which features Phoenix from the Ashes, a song cycle composed by Stillman, based upon poetry from Vedem: The Secret Publication by the Boys of Terezín — also includes selected music by Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, and Ilse Weber.

About the Artists:

Judith Lynn Stillman has been hailed by the press as “a poetess of the piano” and by Wynton Marsalis as “a rare find, a remarkable virtuoso, a consummate artist.” She holds Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from The Juilliard School, where she received the Dethier Prize for Outstanding Pianist and won the Juilliard Concerto Competition. Winner of 18 piano competitions and recipient of the First Pell Award in the Arts, Stillman is the Artist-in-Residence and a Professor of Music at Rhode Island College. An internationally renowned soloist, recording artist, chamber musician, choral conductor, composer and artist-teacher, she has performed in world premieres at Lincoln Center, and has created specials for RI PBS-TV. Soprano Lori Phillips is widely acknowledged as possessing one of the most exciting and expressive dramatic voices in opera. In 2010, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer which was broadcast live on Sirius Satellite Radio. Also in 2010, Ms. Phillips made her role debut as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre with Hawaii Opera Theater. Opera News praised, "Soprano Lori Phillips was a terrific Brünnhilde: her voice started out in excellent form and kept getting better, her clarion upper register sending chills down one's spine." In 2013, she performed as Senta in Der fliegender Holländer with Michigan Opera Theater and Arizona Opera and covered Brünnhilde in The Ring Cycle at both the Metropolitan Opera and Seattle Opera.
