Czech Comedy Classics: Anton Špelec, Sharpshooter

On January 28, at 7 pm, Bistro Bohem will present the kickoff of the new line-up of the film and beer series featuring Czech comedy classics. The series opens with ANTON ŠPELEC, SHARP-SHOOTER (Anton Špelec, Sharpshooter), a humorous tale about a man whose dream is to be recognized as a sharp-shooter. What may appear as bad luck might actually turn his dream into a reality. Enjoy a delicious beer as you watch this film filled with Czech humor.

Anton Špelec (Vlasta Burin) is a producer of musical instruments by trade but a sharp-shooter at heart. He expects to be awarded a medal at a large parade in town where veteran sharp-shooters will be honored. When the town council is one medal short, Anton must wait another year for his prized possession. He drowns his disappointment in drink at the local pub and becomes so drunk that he insults the emperor who sentences him to jail. Instead of fulfilling the emperor’s orders himself, Anton sends his employee in his stead.
About the Director:
With 85 feature films to his credit, Martin Frič was one of the most prolific directors of Barrandov film studios in Prague. Over his four-decade-long career, Frič worked in nearly all genres but was best known for his comedies.
About the Series:
This marks the third year of the film and beer series at Bistro Bohem. The focus of the films for this year is Czech humor which is a very specific part of Czech culture. On the third Tuesday of every month from January - December 2014 (unless otherwise specified), Bistro Bohem will feature Czech comedies. All films will screen in Czech with English subtitles. Each screening includes one free beer as well as an introduction from a representative from the Embassy of the Czech Republic. All screenings are subject to change.
