Czech That Film: Innocence (Nevinnost)

On June 19, at 7 pm, the West End Cinema will screen legendary director Jan Hřebejk's INNOCENCE (Nevinnost). The film deeply explores relationships and blurs the boundary of where truth and morality collide. Winner of two 2012 Czech Lion awards and nominated for an additional six, including Best Director. The screening is a part of the festival Czech That Film presented by Staropramen.

CZECH THAT FILM!

The West End Cinema will feature five new Czech films from May 29-June 26, as part of the festival Czech That Film presented by Staropramen. All of the films are in Czech with English subtitles.       

Czech That Film is an annual film festival presented by the Staropramen brewery and held throughout the United States. The festival is dedicated to raising the profile of Czech films by attracting interest and celebrating Czech cinema at an international level. Conceived in 2012, it provides an opportunity for enthusiasts of global cinema in the United States to experience successful new Czech films recently awarded at both domestic and international stages.   

Screenings and special events introduce new Czech films to local movie critics and representatives of the American film industry, as well as to a wide audience throughout the United States. Screenings include a diverse assortment of filmography, ranging from rotoscoped animation to film noir. Many of the films have won significant international awards, and each screening provides a stimulating perspective from renowned Czech directors. Besides Washington, DC, a selection of films will tour Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle. The festival is organized by the Czech Center New York, Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles andthe Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washinghton, DC.

In the Shadow (Ve stínu): May 29, 7 pm                      
Starring veteran actor Ivan Trojan (Želary), crime and mystery force a detective to risk his life in search of the truth. What he finds in StalinistCzechoslovakia, however, seems to only create more questions than it solves. In the Shadow was submitted to the Academy Awards as the Czech entry for 2012 Best Foreign Language Oscar. (dir. David Ondříček, 2012, 106 min.)   

Flower Buds (Poupata): June 5, 7 pm            
This character-driven story takes us through the trials of an ordinary family, each with their own personal hopes and ambitions. The challenge is always to overcome individual hopelessness, and the tragic, blinding obsessions that make it so difficult to see how to help one another. Winner of the 2011 Czech Lion for Best Film. (dir. Zdeněk Jiráský, 2011, 90 min.)

Men in Hope (Muži v naději): June 12, 7 pm               
In a world of alluring temptations, men can make a bad decision. A stimulating take on the challenges inherent in marriage, this comedy threatens the prescribed notion of devoted love and shows that even a bad choice can work out in the end. (dir. Jiří Vejdělek, 2011, 115 min.)

Innocence (Nevinnost): June 19, 7 pm          
Legendary Czech director Hřebejk (Divided We Fall) drives Innocence to the limits of human understanding. The film deeply explores relationships and blurs the boundary of where truth and morality collide. Winner of two 2012 Czech Lion awards and nominated for an additional six, including Best Director. (dir. Jan Hřebejk, 2011, 98 min.)

Alois Nebel: June 26, 7 pm               
Shot in the unique style of rotoscoped live-action, Alois Nebel follows the lonely life of a train station attendant who feels doomed to misery. The film features Karel Roden (Hellboy, Bourne Supremacy), and selected for both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals in 2011. The film is based on the graphic novel Alois Nebel, by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99. Winner of the 2012 European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and the Czech entry for 2012 Best Foreign Language Oscar. (dir. Tomáš Luňák, 2011, 84 min.)
