Exhibition: Old Jewish Town Within Us

On April 3, at 6:30 pm, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel will present the opening of the exhibition OLD JEWISH TOWN WITHIN US by renowned artist Mark Podwal, followed by the lecture "Recreating the Golem: From the Talmud to Kafka."

The exhibition explores the history and legends of Jewish Prague as told by Mark Podwal’s paintings, drawings, prints and textiles. The evening will also include a lecture on the history of the Golem legend, including how the Hilsner Affair in 1899 dramatically changed the retelling of the legend and Kafka’s version of the legend.          

A reception with light refreshments concludes the event.

Mark Podwal (*1945) is an artist, author and physician. He may be best known for his drawings on The New York Times OP-ED page. In addition, he is the author and illustrator of books for children as well as for adults. Most of these works — Podwal's own as well as those he has illustrated for others—typically focus on Jewish legend, history and tradition. Exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world, his art is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Fogg Art Museum, the Jewish Museum in Prague, and the Library of Congress.
