Acclaimed Czech Director Hřebejk in DC - Apr. 8-10

Top Czech director Jan Hřebejk will present three of his award-winning films – KAWASAKI'S ROSE, HONEYMOON, and COSY DENS, in the Washington, DC area from April 8-10, 2014. Each screening features a Q&A; with the director.

Jan Hřebejk

Jan Hřebejk has made a name for himself amongst the best Czech and international directors. His film Divided We Fall (2000) won five Czech Lion Awards and was also nominated for an Oscar. At the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2013, he won the coveted award for the best director and was nominated for the Crystal Globe. He has made an array of successful films including Cosy Dens (1999), Pupendo (2003), Up and Down (2004), Beauty in Trouble (2006), Innocence (2011), among many others. Furthermore, he has received over 20 international awards and 14 nominations for his films.

Kawasaki’s Rose
2009, 100 min., in Czech with English subtitles

On April 8, at 7 pm, the Embassy of the Czech Republic will present the screening of Kawasaki’s Rose (Kawasakiho růže). In the film, a prestigious psychiatrist is set to receive a state honor for his courageous works as a dissident. It comes to light that at the beginning of the 1970s, the secret police coerced him into discrediting a former friend. Meanwhile, his daughter discovers secrets that may change her life forever. The screening is part of the V4 Film Series.

Honeymoon

On April 9, at 8 pm, the Avalon Theatre will feature Hřebejk’s new film Honeymoon (Líbánky), set at a picture-perfect wedding in the Czech countryside. In the film, an uninvited guest holds secrets that just might make the couple question their vows.The film garnered Hřebejk the award for best director at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (2013). The screening is part of the Lions of Czech Film Series bringing the best of Czech contemporary cinema to Washington, DC.

Cosy Dens
1999, 116 min., in Czech with English subtitles


On April 10, at 7 pm, Bistro Bohem will screen Cosy Dens (Pelíšky), a coming of age story that follows two families caught on different sides of the political spectrum. Politics can’t stop one boy from falling in love with one girl. Her eyes, though, are on another boy – one who wears his hair long, loves the Beatles, and wears American boots. As the film opens, it is Christmas 1967, only months before Soviet tanks roll into Czechoslovakia.
