Important Information: Compatriotic Educational Program and Teaching of Czech Language and Literature

In 2012, the implementation of the Compatriotic Educational Program Abroad will continue, in accordance with the government decree No. 262/2010, as of April 9, 2010. The program includes semester study abroad programs, a 4-week Czech language course, a 2-week Czech language methodology course for teachers from Czech compatriotic communities, sending of Czech language teachers to Czech compatriotic communities abroad, and sending of Czech language teachers to foreign educational institutions.

1) Semester Study Abroad Program

Students - compatriots are provided with scholarships primarily in the following areas of study: Czech for foreigners, tuition for Czech language and literature, history, ethnology, art history and theology. Each year, 15 two-semester scholarships for study at selected public universities in the Czech Republic are provided. Students receive a monthly scholarship including a supplementary charge for accommodation in the amount of 9,000 Czech Crowns (bachelor and master degree), and 9,500 Czech Crowns (doctoral degree). The financial contribution for transport to the Czech Republic and back is provided in the amount of 1,500 Czech Crowns for European participants and 4,500 Czech Crowns for non-European participants. Room and board is provided under the same conditions as for students - Czech citizens. Students are obliged to apply for an appropriate Czech visa (it is not possible to travel e.g. with a tourist visa).

To apply, you are obliged to complete an online application, which is available on the following website: www.dzs.cz (website of DZS = House of Foreign Services, section  “Krajané”).

One copy of the completed and printed application, together with the curriculum vitae, medical statement regarding ability to study, detailed study program, copy of a travel document, and recommendation of a compatriotic organization must be sent to the Embassy of the Czech Republic (attention to Ms. Jana Racova) as follows:

-         by March 15, 2012, for one-semester study in the winter semester of the academic year 2012/2013;

-         by March 15, 2012 for two-semester study in the winter and summer semesters of the academic year 2012/2013;

-         by August 15, 2012, for one-semester study in the summer semester of the academic year 2012/2013.

2) Four-week Czech Language Course in the Czech Republic

Each year, 60 scholarships are provided. The course includes tuition and extra curricular activities aiming proficiency in basic Czech language and knowledge of the Czech Republic. The tuition involves 120 lessons in groups divided according to students’ language skills. Room and board is provided. The financial contribution for transport to the Czech Republic and back is provided in the amount of 1,500 Czech Crowns for European participants and 4,500 Czech Crowns for non-European participants. The minimum age is 18 years; the upper age limit is not set.  Participants are obliged to apply for an appropriate Czech visa. Also in 2012, students can participate in the course as “private payers”.

The course will be held in the Czech Republic from July 27 through August 24, 2012.

One copy of the completed and printed application in one copy (www.dzs.cz), together with a recommendation letter from a compatriotic organization, must be sent to the Embassy of the Czech Republic (attention to Ms. Jana Racova), so it is delivered to the Embassy by March 15, 2012, at the latest.

3) Two-week Czech Language Methodology Course for Teachers from Czech Compatriotic Communities

Each year, 20 scholarships are provided. The participants of the course should assume and improve the methodology of teaching of Czech language. They are provided with transport, accommodation, and food. The arrival in the Czech Republic must be realized 2 weeks before starting the course at the earliest and, the participants must depart by 2 weeks after the course ends. A financial contribution in the amount of 1,000 Czech Crowns will be provided.  Each participant must be at least 18-year-old, and he/she must speak Czech well.

The course will be held from August 27 through September 7, 2012.

To apply, you are obliged to complete an online application, which is available on the following website: www.dzs.cz (Krajané).

The application must include a recommendation from a compatriotic organization, and statement explaining the applicant’s participation in the course for the cultural benefit and/or educational development of the organization.

The completed and printed application must be sent to the Embassy of the Czech Republic  (attention to Ms. Jana Racova), so it is delivered by March 15, 2012, at the latest.

4) Sending of Czech Language Teachers to Compatriotic Communities Abroad

In 2012, 12 Czech teachers are sent to Czech compatriotic communities. A teacher is supposed to help with preparation and implementation of compatriotic cultural, documentary, and educational projects, and take part in networking between Czech compatriotic communities and subjects in the Czech Republic. Conditions for activities of teachers are stipulated in a contract between a compatriotic organization and by a subsequent employment contract between a teacher and DZS. Teachers are generally sent for 1 year; however, their contract can be extended.  The destinations are determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the basis of requirements of compatriotic organizations. Call on selection procedures will be published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the DZS.

 


5) Sending of Czech Language Teachers to Foreign Educational Institutions (Universities)

The purpose of this part of the program is sending of Czech language teachers abroad, in order to promote Czech language and literature and Czech culture. The Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic, together with the House of Foreign Services (DZS), publish job offers for teachers each zdar (by January 31, 2012, for the following academic zdar, at the latest). The Ministry sends the information about possible candidates to embassies, to be handed over to foreign institutions. A foreign educational institution will make a selection from recommended candidates.

The Ministry of Education can, upon the request and explicit recommendation of the Embassy, provide foreign educational institutions with one-time language equipment (books, dictionaries, promotion materials, etc.), depending on its budget limitations.
