Memorial Day Observance at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Baltimore

(This article expired 26.05.2017.)

On Memorial Day, Deputy Chief of Mission Jaroslav Zajíček and colonel Miroslav Šuhaj traveled to Baltimore to participate at the Annual Memorial Day Observance. The event took place at the Bohemian National Cemetery of Baltimore, which was founded in 1884 to serve the needs of the Bohemian community.

Together with the President of the Cemetery and Sokol Baltimore Michael Rokos they celebrated and acknowledged those who had passed. They addressed the Czechoslovak community, raised the flags of the Czech Republic and of the United States over the cemetery, sang traditional songs and the respective anthems together with Czech and Slovak Singers. They also laid flowers on the graves of prominent people of Czech origin including Sgt. William R. Jecelin, a twenty-year-old member of the Bohemian community who died heroically during the Korean War and received the Congressional Medal of Honor, and Mr. Emil Taborsky, a long-time member of the Czech and Slovak Heritage Association.

The Bohemian National Cemetery is more than a cemetery.  It was also a site for the Czech school, for gatherings, and traditional cultural events.  In the past Czechs would hold picnics and other cultural events on the open land and in the old house. For further information see the website of the cemetery.
