Explosion in West, TX - Czech Government Approves Aid

Th Government of the Czech Republic has approved the donation of 4 million Czech Crowns (approximately USD 200 000) to the town of West, TX, which was severely damaged during the chemical plant explosion. The majority of the town´s population has Czech roots and has been the beacon of Czech and Czechoslovak heritage in Texas for generations.

Ambassador Petr Gandalovič travelled to West immediately after the explosion to personally express his condolences to those affected by the blast. Together with Texas Governor Perry he was able to visit the most gravely impated area of the town to see the damage with his own eyes. He also met with Mayor Muska and the members of the local Czech-American community to discuss specific forms of assistance that the Czech Republic could provide to the town.

The aid approved by the government will mostly be used to rebuild the infrastrutcture of Czech-American organizations and associations in the town destroyed in the explosion.

The Czech-American community in all of the United States has also quickly reacted to the tragedy. The organization American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR) has launched a fund-raising campaign to offer disaster relief to those affected.
