(This article expired 09.06.2016.)

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg visited Washington, DC on June 1- 3, 2013.

The Minister started his visit by giving a guest speech at the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Global Forum. In his speech, the Minister pointed out that the Czech Republic will continue to stand firmly behind the government of Israel in its responsibility to provide basic security for its citizens. However, he warned that the crisis of the peace process and a deepening sense of a “long-term provisionality” of the status quo create specific new political dangers for Israel.

On June 3, Minister Schwarzenberg met with numerous representatives of the capital´s think-tank community, including dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski of CSIS and dr. Michele Flournoy of CNAS. In the afternoon the Minister met with Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and 8 other members of the US Senate. During their meeting, a variety of issues was discussed, including energy security and Czech Republic´s role as the US Protecting Power in Syria. Shortly before his departure from Washington, DC, Minister Schwarzenberg met with the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers Alan Krueger.
