Shirley Temple was barely six years old when she attained international fame as a child film star. Among Czechs and Slovaks, she became popular especially in her other role - that of a diplomat. Her first ambassadorial posting was to Accra, from 1974 to 1976. In the summer of 1989, she presented her credentials as the new US ambassador to the president of the communist Czechoslovakia, Gustáv Husák. At the time, few would have believed that during her assignment, she would live to represent the United States in a friendly country and become one of the symbols of the restoration of its freedom after decades of oppression. Ambassador Temple Black served as the Head of Mission to Czechoslovakia until July 1992. With her open and graceful personality, she made a significant contribution to the renewal of long-standing friendship among our nations.
