Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg on the ratification of New START Treaty by the U.S. Senate

(This article expired 20.12.2013.)

The Czech Republic welcomes the successful ratification of the New START Treaty by the United States Senate.

The implementation of this Treaty signed by President Obama and President Medvedev in Prague on April 8, 2010 will enhance strategic stability in the relations between the US and Russia. We strongly appreciate that the United States has thus demonstrated its commitment to the development of a new strategic environment based on mutual trust, cooperation, verification and predictability.

We encourage the Lower Chamber of the Parliament of the Russian Federation– Duma – to follow suit soon. The expeditious entry into force of the new START Treaty will manifest the determination of both sides towards meeting their commitment under Article VI of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation and will advance non-proliferation efforts and initiatives.

We are pleased that one of the crucial elements of the nuclear agenda introduced by President Obama in his April 2009 Prague speech has moved forward significantly. This bold ambition, known as the “Prague Agenda”, requires effort on various fronts, including non-proliferations and nuclear security, where the Czech Republic is determined to contribute.
