(This article expired 08.01.2015.)

On January 6, the National Endowment for Democracy in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, DC, and the Vaclav Library in Prague organized a memorial tribute to honor President Vaclav Havel.

The list of distinguished personalities who personally shared their memories of Vaclav Havel included Madeleine Albright, Wendy Luers, Azar Nafisi, Radwan Ziadeh, Li Xiaorong or Birtukan Midekssa. Others such as Aung San Suu Kyi or Oswaldo Paya were not able to be in Washington in person but recorded video messages that were broadcast during the tribute.

US President Barack Obama, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Adam Michnik, Saad Eddin Ibrahim or Martin Butora sent their personal messages in writing. President Obama´s statement was read aloud by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

At the same time, a tribute commemorating the 35th anniversary of the publishing of Charter 77 took place in the Archa theater in Prague. Both events were connected with a video stream making this a truly transatlantic tribute.
