Minister of Health Leos Heger in Illinois and Minnesota

Minister of Health of the Czech Republic Leos Heger visited Illinois and Minnesota at the end of March 2012. In Chicago, he opened the Czech-US Technology Days, a 2-day event bringing together key players in the field of bio- and nanotechnology from the Czech Republic and the Chicago region.

The event was co-organized by the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, CzechInvest – Czech government agency responsible for attracting foreign investment to the Czech Republic, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. As part of the program, participants also visited the Illinois Science and Technology Park in Skokie, IL, and the Argonne National Laboratory.

The event gave an opportunity to research institutions and private businesses from both countries to present their work and their capabilities to their partners with the aim of launching a long-term international cooperation. Minister Heger continued his trip to Minnesota where he visited the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic and the St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno are cooperating on the project of the International Clinical Research Center (ICRC) in Brno. The facility is expected to be completed later this year and will enable researches and physicians not only from the United States and the Czech Republic but also from other countries to jointly work on highly specialized projects, mainly in the fields of cardiology and neurology. In Rochester, Minister Heger expressed his support for this project and discussed its details with both Czech and US researchers and physicians. The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis was the final visit of the visit of Minister Heger. He met with representatives of the School of Public Health and School of Medicine to discuss and compare the US and Czech education systems in the field of health and human services. He also met with researches from both countries that are cooperating on stem cell research both in Minneapolis and in Brno.
