ROBOT 100

At the end of the rainy season, three successful cultural events took place in Abuja. Their common theme was the celebrations of the centenary of the word "robot", which was first publicly heard in Karel Čapek's play R.U.R. at the premiere at the National Theater in 1921. Nigerian, and therefore pan-African, premiere of the play R.U.R. in the amphitheater of the Embassy of Brazil was the culmination of the monthly celebrations of the centenary of the most famous Czech - the robot.

French-Czech robotic evening at the French Institute in Abuja

A French-Czech robotic evening took place on September 19, during which Karel Čapek and his work were commemorated, as well as the break-up of the legendary robotic music group Daft Punk, which took place this year, when the word robot celebrates its 100th birthday. After the screening of the documentary film about the Daft Punk group "Unchained", there was a free debate about film, robots, artificial intelligence and digitization in today's society.

Competition for the best robot drawings at a local school and exhibition of winning creations

In cooperation with the management of the Springhall British School in Abuja, a competition for the best drawing of a robot was announced on Children's Day on June 1, 2021, and at the same time the children were introduced to Karel Čapek and his work. Pupils processed their works during the art classes in June. The evaluation of the best drawings took place in September with the participation of Ambassador M. Skolil and Deputy Hana Trousilová. The three best works were selected from each class, and some children created 3D models of robots, which also became part of the subsequent exhibition. The opening of the exhibition took place on October 27, 2021 at 3.30 pm in the foyer of the theater hall at the Brazilian embassy. Pupils received diplomas and cups with a picture of a robot. The exhibition in the theater foyer perfectly accompanied the following evening premiere of the play R.U.R.

National Day Celebration - R.U.R. in Nigeria

The culmination of the activities of public diplomacy organized under the heading "ROBOT 100" was the celebration of the National day of the Czech Republic, which took place on October 27 at the Brazilian Embassy in Abuja. Embassy Abuja, in cooperation with our long-term partner, the Jos Repertory Theater, organized the performance of Karel Čapek's play R.U.R. in the Nigerian and probably the African premiere. The rendition offered to the audience by the Josu ensemble was captivating and adorned with several original ideas. At one point, the audience turned into robots, and Rossum's secret manuscript with the formula for making robots was ceremoniously dedicated to Ambassador Skolel at the end of the performance - the fate of humanity now lies in his hands. Attendance was plentiful, after the release of restrictive measures, the entire theater hall (130 seats) was eventually filled, not only representatives of the diplomatic corps but also important Nigerian guests took part.

The evening ended with a festive reception. The premiere of the play was sponsored by companies Defcon, Linet and VAE Controls. The visual "ROBOT 100", which was used in all printed materials, was provided free of charge to the Embassy Abuja by the artist Mikuláš Podprocký. Abuja Embassy collaborated with local artists Millicent Osumuo and Kokab Farrukh on the production of masks, costumes, theatrical program, posters and mugs for guests.
