Czech gynecologists performed 50 surgeries in Tamale

In the past week, a team of Czech doctors of gynecology concluded a weekly mission to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The team led by prof. Michal Zikán, Head doctor at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Bulovka Hospital in Prague, and consisting of two gynecologists and two anesthesiologists conducted free of charge surgeries on 47 women with serious medical conditions. The patients were chosen depending on the severity of their diagnosis. In addition to the surgeries, the doctors provided medical screenings to more than 40 women.

The Czech doctors worked in cooperation with their local counterparts from the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Tamale Teaching Hospital led by head doctor Anna Maria and engaged in the exchange of best practices. The local doctors expressed great appreciation for the activities conducted by the mission.

This was already the second mission of the Czech gynecologists to Tamale. The first mission was conducted in December 2019. The next one is planned for the fall of 2021. The Czech Republic is planning to expand the MEDEVAC program in Ghana and is currently working on launching a similar cooperation with the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in traumatology and plastic and reconstructive surgery specialisations. If the circumstances allow, a first mission of Czech traumatologists will be posted to Cape Coast in November 2021.

The missions are part of the Czech government-led program of medical cooperation titled MEDEVAC, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic. MEDEVAC aims to provide access to health care to vulnerable groups of population and contribute to the exchange of expertise and knowledge transfer among the Czech and local doctors.
