Celebration of the Czech Independence Day and 30 years of democracy

On 24 October, 2019, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra hosted a reception to celebrate the Independence Day of 28 October and also to commemorate 30 years of democracy. The reception at the Residence of the Czech Ambassador was attended by more than 300 guests from the diplomatic corps, Ghana´s state institutions, business community, former Ghanaian students in Czechoslovakia and also by the Czech community in Ghana. The Government of Ghana was represented by the Minister of Planning, hon. prof. George Gyan Baffour. As a special guest, the Embassy welcomed the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic, H.E. Peter Holásek.

In his speech, Chargé d´affaires of the Czech Republic, Mr. Lukáš Kindl, reminded the guests that, in addition to the 101st anniversary of independence, the Czech Republic commemorates also 30 years since the fall of Communism. To this end, an exhibition titled “1989 - The Velvet Revolution, the end of the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia” was displayed at the Residence to document the revolutionary days of 1989 in photography. The Chargé d´affaires suggested that “these days make us remember that democracy and freedom have to be fought for and can never be taken for granted.” He also pointed out that “as a reflection of our historic experience, support to human rights and democratic transition have played a key role in the Czech foreign policy ever since.”

Mr. Kindl also reminded the 60th anniversary of Czech(Slovak)-Ghanaian relations and praised the increased economic cooperation between both countries and high number mutual visits. In 2019, five Ghanaian delegations paid a visit to the Czech Republic (Minister of Transport, Minister of Roads and Highways, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Deputy Minister of Railway Development, and Deputy Minister of Health).

Speaking on behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Minister of Planning, hon. prof. George Gyan Baffour, welcomed the increased interest of Czech companies in doing business in Ghana and reflected on major Czechoslovak development construction projects in Ghana over the 60 years of relations.

As the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution is a joint Czechoslovak anniversary, the Czech Embassy welcomed as special guest the Slovak Ambassador to Ghana based in Abuja, H.E. Peter Holásek, who delivered a note addressing the commemorated anniversaries, and underscored that Czechs and Slovaks have been enjoying brotherly relations despite the split in 1993.
