MEDEVAC: Czech flying doctors in Ghana

From 20th May to 23rd May 2019, a preparatory mission of the MEDEVAC program visited Ghana in order to identify possible areas for cooperation. MEDEVAC is a government-led program of medical cooperation coordinated by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic, whose goal is to provide access to health care to vulnerable groups of population and contribute to the exchange of expertise and knowledge transfer among the Czech and local doctors.

The preparatory mission consisted of: plastic and reconstruction surgeon, professor Andrej Sukop (Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, Prague),  gynaecologist professor Michal Zikán (Na Bulovce Hospital, Prague), head of traumatology, dr. Petr Špiroch (Faculty Hospital Olomouc), and head of infectology, dr. Hana Roháčová (Na Bulovce Hospital, Prague). The team of doctors was accompanied by the program coordinator from the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic.

The mission visited three hospitals: Tamale Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital in Accra. They met also with the Director of Ghana Health Service, and discussed with the local representatives of the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) possible inclusion of refugees from Cote d´Ivoire, Togo and other countries among the treated patients (in addition to the Ghanaians). The actual missions of the so-called flying doctors will be launched in the second half of the year. The surgeries and other medical interventions by the Czech doctors will be provided to the patients in need for  free.
