The Czech Republic will provide humanitarian aid to the people affected by the conflict in Ethiopia

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Tomáš Petříček decided to provide 10 million Czech crowns as an urgent aid to the refugees in Sudan and Ethiopia. The humanitarian situation in the Tigray region has worsened in the past couple of weeks due to the armed operations. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will be responsible for administrating the support.

“We follow the last development in Ethiopia with concern. Ethiopia is our key partner in the Horn of Africa and belongs among our official development aid priority countries,” informed the minister Petříček. Ethiopia wants to become a middle-income country by 2025 and the Czech Republic supports this vision. The head of the Czech diplomacy confirmed this stance also during his last year´s visit to the country accompanied by a delegation of businesspersons.

The newly approved financial support follows previous cooperation between the Czech Republic and UNHCR. Czechia already sent an expert on humanitarian protection to the affected regions and recently supported with 10 million Czech crowns a project that focuses on the protection of internally displaced women and girls.

“We support all the steps that will lead to a settlement of the situation including reconciliation and formation of a political system in which all ethnicities and nationalities will live in harmony and respect to each other´s differences,” said the minister Petříček. At the same time, it is important to maintain territorial integrity of Ethiopia. Therefore, the role of the African Union is irreplaceable.

Sudan was able to effectively react to the humanitarian crisis, especially on its eastern border. Many international organizations act systematically in the area, among other the International Committee of the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières or UNHCR.
