Development Cooperation and Scholarships

Within the framework of development cooperation (ODA), the Czech Republic has been active in Ethiopia to a greater extent since 2001. Since 2011, Ethiopia has been one of the priority countries for Czech development cooperation. The main Czech development activities focused on education, water supply and, to a lesser extent, agriculture and social development. Currently, Czech development cooperation focuses on agriculture and rural development together with sustainable management of natural resources.

Based on the Strategy of Foreign Development Cooperation for the period 2018 to 2030, the Czech Republic has selected six priority partner countries to which its long-term projects are directed: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Georgia, Cambodia, Moldova and Zambia.

Ethiopia is also a priority country for the period 2018 to 2023.

Following this decision, a Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation was signed on 16 February 2018 between the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. An integral part of the memorandum is the bilateral Development Cooperation Program for the period 2018-2023. To meet the priorities of development cooperation, the Czech Republic focuses mainly on supporting rural development and agriculture and ensuring food security while protecting the landscape and sustainable management of land and forests. The Program also focuses on the sustainable management of natural resources, especially water. It also promotes inclusive social development of all sections of the population and equal access to all levels of education and training and access to health care. Czech development cooperation also promotes gender equality, good democratic governance and climate protection in the country. The Czech Republic complements bilateral development activities with humanitarian assistance, especially in the event of major disasters and an increased influx of refugees from neighboring countries, but also in relation to complex and long-term humanitarian needs.Czech development cooperation with Ethiopia is concentrated mainly in the Region of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNPR).

The Czech development cooperation consists of these following instruments:

· Bilateral projects

· Trilateral projects

· Aid for Trade projects

· Humanitarian aid

· Small local projects

· Government scholarships for developing countries
