Czech Ambassador Inaugurates Water Supply Scheme in Sidama Funded by Czech Development Cooperation

Feb 2, 2021 in Shamena Girmama. H.E. Pavel Mikeš,  Ambassador of the Czech Republic and H.E. Desta Lodamo, Sidama Regional State President jointly inaugurated a water scheme for drinking water supply in Awassa Zurya during a traditional ceremony. The water scheme currently supplies 20 waterpoints through 23 km of extended pipelines and serves more than 29.500 beneficiaries from 3 Kebeles. (Shamena Girmama, Umbulo Tengaka, Umbulo Woncho). The event was covered by all local media.
 

The project under the name: "Establishment of Sustainable Drinking Water Supply System in Hawassa Zurya Woreda, Sidama Region" has been running through 2019-2021. It did not only supply drinking water to the communities, but also ensured, that hygiene and sanitation components were included.

Last, but not least, capacities of Water users Associations and officers at Water bureaus have been increased in order to efficiently manage the new water infrastructure after the handover. This was so far the largest constructed water scheme in Ethiopia funded by Czech Development Cooperation, that included water supply to health facilities and schools in the area.

The project was implemented by a consorcium of Czech-Ethiopian company Aquacon and NGO "People in Need" in close cooperation with local government partners. CzechAid has been active in Sidama during the last 10 years and this was already fifth large-scale water scheme completed. CzechAid operates through integrated projects and also supports TVET Colleges in Electromechanical water scheme management and capacity building, so the young people are able to maintain the newly constructed water schemes, water pumps and generators and ensure long years of sustainability.

 All the interventions are planned and monitored together with Regional government structures and the outcomes received a very positive evaluation. Under the  Management of  Natural Resources priority area, CzechAid is also involved in restoring of degraded lands, reforestation and support of livelihood to underserved Kebeles of Sidama Region.
