Doctors from the Czech Heart Foundation examined over 400 patients

In recent weeks, a medical mission of the Czech Heart Foundation visited Ethiopia. During their visit the doctors were able to examine 402 adults and pediatric patients by echo-cardiography for rheumatic and congenital heart diseases. Doctors worked at Zewditu Hospital in Addis Ababa and Bishoftu Hospital. The embassy also mediated examinations in the Shamida orphanage for abandoned and disabled children. Thanks to the diagnosis and contribution of the Foundation, the operation of 11-year-old Robel, who suffered from a serious congenital heart disease, also succeeded.

The mission was led by the founder of the Foundation and cardiologist of the Prague IKEM, Michal Pazderník. He was accompanied by Czech and Slovak cardiologists Mária Holická, Anna Chaloupková and Markéta Mikulcová. Tomáš Kaplan, a board member of the Foundation, assisted in the smooth running of the mission. The embassy welcomed all delegation members and was in close contact with the mission during the week. Following the proposal of the embassy, the Czech Heart team went to Shamida orphanage for abandoned and disabled children, where they examined all 28 children. On Friday, February 21, the Czech Ambassador to Ethiopia, Pavel Mikeš, received the mission and thanked them for their work.

The mission has been able to diagnose a number of patients with congenital heart diseases and is now working to ensure that these patients receive appropriate care. As part of the mission, cardiologists also discovered an 11-year-old boy, Robel, whose serious heart defect required immediate intervention. The boy was operated already during the visit and is now recovering successfully.

The Czech Heart Foundation focuses on helping children and adults with congenital heart diseases in selected locations in Africa and Asia. Therefore, it organizes medical missions of Czech doctors to these countries and mediates direct assistance. It also organizes internships for Czech doctors and nurses, study programs in the Czech Republic for African medical students, and finally educational activities in the Czech Republic and organization of events for the public to raise awareness of the issue.

The aim of the Foundation is to transfer knowledge in the field of cardiology, where Czech experts are among the best in the world, to places where such knowledge is still missing. Furthermore, the  Foundation supports the development of doctors' education in a transparent manner and effectively assists selected pediatric patients with congenital heart defects who would not have survived to adulthood without help of the Foundation.
