Short-term Schengen visa (C class)

Citizens of Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Comoros and Somalia are subject to visa obligation for short-term (up to 90 days) as well as long-term (over 90 days) stay in the Czech Republic/Schengen area. Citizens of Seychelles are exempted from visa obligation for short-term stay (up to 90 days).

Djiboutian citizens/residents can submit a short-stay (Schengen) visa application to the Embassy of France in Djibouti which is representing the Czech Republic in Djibouti.

Comorian citizens/residents can submit a short-stay (Schengen) visa application to the Embassy of France in Moroni which is representing the Czech Republic in the Comoros.

The visa application shall be submitted in accordance with the instructions of the representative consulate, which shall also decide on the issue of the visa. Any appeal procedure against non-issue of a visa shall also be governed by the law of the State whose embassy has received and decided on the application, the appeal proceedings being conducted by the administrative authorities of the representing State.

Nevertheless, the option of submitting the visa application at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Addis Ababa is open also for the above mentioned applicants.

Citizens or residents in Ethiopia, Seychelles, Somalia, and South Sudan need to submit their visa applications at the Czech Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

As of 1 May 2015, the Czech Republic is representing the Slovak Republic in Ethiopia for the purpose of examining Schengen visa applications and issuing Schengen visas. Thus, Ethiopian citizens/residents intending to travel to the Slovak Republic can submit a short-stay (Schengen) visa application also to the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Addis Ababa.

Visa applications need to be submitted in person.

Applicants for short-stay (Schengen) visa can apply up to 6 months but no later than 15 days before the planned travel. As per the Schengen Visa Code the visa application is decided within 15 calendar days (in specific cases up to 45 days).

Visa fee is payable in cash Ethiopian Birr (ETB) only. In case the application is refused the fee is NOT REFUNDED.

Applicants for a short-stay (Schengen visa) do need to make an appointment via visa_addisabeba@mzv.cz.

1. What documents do I need for the Schengen visa application? 2. In which language do I bring the documents? We accept the documents in Czech, Slovak and English languages.

3. How much is the fee and how do I pay it? We only accept the payments in Ethiopian birr in cash. The prices change according to the exchange rate. The amount in birr equals 80 euro according to the rate. 

4. What documents do you require as a proof of return? We require employment confirmation from your employer, vacation confirmation from your employer, statement from land register about your property or rent contract etc. Other documents can be required. Long-term visa (D class) and residency permit applications

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Addis Ababa accepts two visa applicants for studies on Tuesdays and two visa applicants for other types of long-term visas on Thursdays.

Every applicant must arrange an appointment by e-mail sent to: visa_addisabeba@mzv.cz.  The e-mail should contain the following information about the applicant:  

1. name and surname
2. type of visa you want to apply for (long-term visa or  residence permit), travel purpose
3. valid personal telephone number and email address
4. information if you collected all documents as listed here: Visa Types | Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic (mzv.cz)

Should you intend to apply for the study long-term visa, kindly ask for the appointment only if you have already received the ORIGINAL of the letter issued by the Czech university confirming the admission to studies and original and legalized contract about accommodation.

FAQ for D class visa

1. How do I approach the visa section of the Embassy? Send an email to: visa_addisabeba@mzv.cz. Requests sent to a different e-mail address, made over phone call, or in person at the Embassy will be disregarded! Structure email as following: Subject: full name + reason of writing an email, Text: Please, mention the reason of sending an email, when asking for an appointment, write: visa type you want to apply for, if you already have all the documents to apply for visa etc. If you come in person without an appointment your application won´t be accepted! 

2. In which language do I bring the documents? We accept only originals in Czech language. Additionally, the housing contract must be legalized in the Czech Republic. Only document which is English language is bank statement.

3. Can I get the official translation of the documents at the Embassy? Yes, we can translate some official documents you need for your visa application such as Certificate of Good Conduct, Birth Certificate etc. Also, the translations can be legalized at the Embassy

4. Do I need special appointment for superlegalization of the documents I need for my visa application? No, your documents will be prepared during the submission of the visa application.
