Ambassador Josef Koutsky visited Azraq refugee camp and the reopened Jaber/Nasib crossing between Jordan and Syria

On 1 April 2019, H.E. Mr. Josef Koutsky, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Jordan accompanied by the Czech Television's reporter for the Middle East Mr. David Borek, visited the Azraq refugee camp, where he met with the camp’s management as well as the humanitarian workers.

The Azraq refugee camp was opened in 30 April 2014, with a capacity of 50,000 people and the size of the camp is ​​14.7 km2. It is the second largest facility of its kind for Syrian refugees in Jordan. There are currently 36,550 Syrian refugees living in the camp, 60% of whom are children, of which 22% composed of children under the age of five. The Czech Republic previously supported the camp in the form of development and humanitarian aid - in the year 2017, with the collaboration of Germany, both countries financed the reconstruction of 6,000 residential shelters supplemented with new kitchen facilities. A year earlier; 2016, the Czech Republic donated a total of 40 million CZK (around 1.750 million USD) to Azraq. 

Subsequently, on 2 April 2019, the Czech delegation visited the re-opened border crossing of Jaber/ Nasib between Syria and Jordan, through which crossing between the two countries can be utilised again starting from October 2018. Between 3,000 and 4,000 passengers use it every day to travel past both directions also in the case of private cars the total number ranges between 1,200 and 2,000; in addition to an average of 200 trucks pass through it every day.
