Alexander Dubček – from Prague Spring to Ambassador in Ankara

To commemorate the anniversary of the Prague Spring of 1968 and its leading personality Mr. Alexander Dubček, the Embassies of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in Ankara organized together with the Department of International Relations of the Middle East Technical University a commemorative seminar under the title „Alexander Dubček – from Prague Spring to Ambassador in Ankara“. The event took place on May, 14, 2018 in Park Inn Hotel at the Aleksander Dubcek Caddesi in Ankara.

Alexander Dubček belongs undisputedly to one of the most remarkable and impactful Czechoslovak political figures of the 20th Century. His thoughts, postures and daily political endeavour helped to shape the political environment in Czechoslovakia and instigated liberal reforms of the famous Prague Spring of 1968. He was a staunch believer in the Czechoslovak unity and brotherhood, moreover, he was one of the most vocal critics of the Czechoslovak separation. He was not only important to the Czechoslovak common history, but had also a very special relationship to Turkey, where he was posted as Ambassador to Ankara. Therefore, the Embassies of the Czech Republic and Slovakia decided to commemorate his personality, his professional work and stay in Ankara by organizing the seminar "Alexander Dubček – from Prague Spring to Ambassador in Ankara".

The event was launched by a presentation of documentary on Alexander Dubček, followed by inaugural speeches by H.E. Mr. Pavel Kafka, Ambassador of the Czech Republic, H.E. Mrs. Anna Tureničová, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic, and H.E. Mrs. Lebibe Gülhan Ulutekin, Director General for Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey. The seminar provided also three different reflections on Alexander Dubček presented by Mr. Oldřich Tůma, researcher of the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Science, MUDr. Pavol Dubček, son of Mr. Alexander Dubček, and Mr. Özgen Acar, journalist of Cumhurriyet newspaper. Seminar was moderated by  Prof. H. Bağcı, professor of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Department of International Relations.

On the sidelines of the seminar, both Embassies presented also two photo exhibitions reflecting Alexander Dubček´s political and private life and showcasing photographs taken by journalist H. Yüksel Hancerli who documented the first arrival of Ambassador Alexander Dubcek to Turkey (Istanbul) in 1970.

The event was closed by ceremonial launching of a monography about Alexander Dubček and the Prague Spring written by Mr. Polat Üründül, Ph.D. student of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara.
