2009-Event organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Greece to commemorate the 5th anniversary of EU enlargement in 2004 and to celebrate Europe Day and the exhibition of posters entitled "European Identity"

On 7 May 2009 the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Greece organised a political and cultural event on the occasion of the 5th Anniversary of EU enlargement in 2004 and to celebrate Europe Day. The event took place in the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. It included an opening of the international exhibition of posters by students of Art Academies from EU states entitled “European Identity“. The event was part of the official programme of the cultural events organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic within the framework of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in Greece, the exhibition has received the status of an official accompanying event of the Czech Presidency in the EU Council from The Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

On 7 May 2009, shortly after noon, a political and cultural event organised by the the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Greece on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of EU enlargement in 2004 and to celebrate Europe Day took place in the Byzantine and Christian Museum in the centre of Athens.

After an introductory word by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Greece H. Mottlová, who summarized the significance and the achievements of the enlargement in 2004, President of the most esteemed Greek think-tank - the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and internationally renowned expert on EU issues prof. Loukas Tsoukalis delivered a lecture entitled “Five years after EU enlargement and the future of the EU of 27“.

In the second part, dedicated to the celebration of Europe Day, Ambassador H. Mottlová oficially opened the international exhibition of posters by students of Art Academies from EU states entitled “European Identity“, prepared by the Czech Council on Foreign Relations.

In 2005 the Czech Council on Foreign Relations organised a competition for students of Art Academies from EU countries. The main idea of the competition was to express - without any linguistic hurdles - the attitude of the young generation towards the European integration and the European identity. 167 students from 15 Art Academies from 8 EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) participated in the competition.

The exhibition “European Identity” in Athens presented a selection of 40 posters from all participating countries. The exhibition in Athens lasted until 10 May 2009 and it received the status of an official accompanying event of the Czech Presidency in the EU Council from The Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

The event was attended by approximately 200 guests, including many Ambassadors to Greece, high officials of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Greek political, media, economic and cultural representatives.

Special appreciation goes to the management of the Byzantine and Christin Museum for the kind support of the event.
