Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced yesterday that Da'esh's occupation of Nineveh Province has finally come to an end. The city of Tel Afar and key surrounding areas were liberated thanks to the efforts of the Iraqi armed forces with the support of the Global Coalition.

The EU congratulates the efforts of all those involved. We reiterate our support for all Iraqis at this critical time in the continuing fight against Da'esh as part of the campaign to liberate the whole of the country. We praise the resilience of the affected citizens and mourn those who have died. We will continue to support Iraq through our humanitarian and stabilisation activities. The liberation of Tel Afar and Nineveh Province marks an important step on the road to peace.
