Statement by the EU High Representative Josep Borrell of November 7, 2021

"The EU strongly condemns the assassination attempt against Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

The perpetrators of this attempted attack must be held accountable. Any violence is unacceptable and must not be allowed to undermine the democratic process.

Calm, restraint and dialogue are essential in the post-election period. All parties must engage in political dialogue and cooperation to address the challenges Iraq is facing, in the interest of the country and the Iraqi people.

The EU continues to support the Iraqi people on their path toward peace, stability and prosperity."

"I strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi early this morning. Czechia firmly supports the legitimate government of Iraq and calls on all Iraqi political forces to unite in their support for maintaining law and order."
