On 29 and 30 September 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jakub Kulhánek visited Azerbaijan along with a large business delegation. During his working visit, Minister Kulhánek held talks with high Azerbaijani representatives including President  Ilham Aliyev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov; during the visit, a Czech-Azerbaijani Agreement on Cooperation in the Area of Energy was signed. During his visit, Minister Kulhánek also opened a Czech-Azerbaijani Business Forum in Baku and visited the Alat Free Economic Zone.

The working visit focused primarily on economic cooperation. Czech companies can build on their international success across a wide range of areas, including transportation, nanotechnology and health, as they are looking for new opportunities in the region; according to Minister Kulhánek, „the presence of 17 representatives of our companies in the delegation is a proof of the interest of Czech companies in the Caucasus“.

During his visit, Minister Kulhánek met the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, to whom he expressed the gratitude of the Czech Republic for the logistical support provided by Azerbaijan during the airlift from Afghanistan in August 2021. According to Jakub Kulhánek, „the mission would not have succeeded without this assitance“.

Along with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov, the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs hailed the resumption of high-level dialogue between both countries after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Kulhánek also visited the site where the Alat Free Economic Zone has been established in order to attract foreign investment to Azerbaijan. Developing mutual economic relations being a priority for both countries, the Czech Republic and Azerbaijan agreed to hold a meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic, Technical-Scientific and Cultural Cooperation before the end of 2021. According to Minister Kulhánek, „new Czech and Azerbaijani members of the Commission will be appointed soon. This is a major step forward, with a potential to boost our economic cooperation“.

During the visit of Minister Kulhánek, an Agreement on Cooperation in the Area of Energy between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan was signed.

From Azerbaijan, Minister Kulhánek moved to Armenia for another working visit.
