Consultations with Azerbaijani MFA Deputy Minister Khalafov

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aleš Chmelař and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Martin Povejšil had a meeting with Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov on 26 June 2019. Bilateral relations, the EU – Azerbaijan relations, regional and security topics were discussed during the consultations.
 

Deputy Minister Chmelař and Deputy Minister Khalafov agreed that the Czech-Azerbaijani relations are close, friendly and mutually beneficial. A planned visit of the President of Azerbaijan to the Czech Republic brings a new impetus to the political dialog and support the development of economic relations between the two countries. Deputy Minister Chmelař reiterated that the Czech Republic supports the finalization of the negotiations of the new Comprehensive Agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan.

The discussion between Deputy Minister Povejšil and Deputy Minister Khalafov was concentrated on issues related to the cooperation among South-Caucasus counties, including the security in the region. Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Deputy Minister Povejšil underlined that a peaceful solution through negotiations is the one and only way to reach the settlement of this conflict. The Deputy Ministers also exchanged their views on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
