International conference in Baku commemorates Comenius, the Czech „teacher of nations“

On 4 and 5 April 2019, the Baku State University (BSU) hosted the 1st international conference at the Azerbaijani soil to commemorate the great Czech pedagogue Jan Amos Komenský, also known as Comenius (1592 – 1670). Jointly organised by the pedagogical faculties of the BSU and the Charles University in Prague as well as the National Pedagogical Museum and Library of J. A. Comenius in Prague, the conference entitled „Traditional and Modern Approaches to Education“ brought together a large group of lecturers from Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, India, Montenegro, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation.

After the opening remarks by the BSU Vice Rector Prof. Aydın Kazımzadə, the Dean of the BSU Pedagogical Faculty Prof. Hikmət Əlizadə, the Head of the Department of Psychology and Milli Məclis Deputy Prof. Bəxtiyar Əliyev a the Deputy Head of Mission of the Czech Republic in Baku Daniel Putík, dozens of lecturers presented their papers dedicated to various aspects of Comenius' life, work and legacy. The group of Czech lecturers included the Director of the Czech Historical Institute in Rome, Prof. Jaroslav Pánek, the Vice Rector of the University of Pardubice, Prof. Petr Vorel and the Director of the National Pedagogical Museum and Library of J. A. Comenius, Dr. Markéta Pánková. As a contribution to the development of international scientific cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic covered the travel costs of two lecturers – the renowned educational psychologist Prof. Andrey Verbitsky from the Sholokhov Moscow State University for Humanities and Prof. Bala Gangadhar Tilak Jandhyala from the National University of Educational Planning and Administration in New Delhi whose contribution focused on the legacy of ancient Indian universities.
