Journalists = allies in fight against disinformation

On 2021 World Press Freedom Day (3 May), the European Union launched a regional communication campaign ‘Journalists = allies in fight against disinformation’ in the Eastern Partnership countries, including Azerbaijan.

In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become clearer than ever that access to reliable information can be a matter of life or death. Under increasingly difficult circumstances, media workers everywhere have significantly contributed to our understanding of the pandemic by making overwhelming and highly complex flows of information more accessible, making scientific facts understandable to the broader public, providing regularly updated data, and engaging in fact-checking. As Christophe Deloire, Secretary-General of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), remarked when presenting the 2021 World Press Freedom Index, “journalism is the best vaccine against disinformation”.

“Disinformation campaigns we are seeing now undermine the vaccination roll-out pace and make it slower for us, at least hypothetically, to return to normalcy”, explains Roman Koliada from Ukraine – one of the 29 journalists and media experts interviewed for the campaign. Check out the answers by his Azerbaijani colleagues.
