Mendel University in Brno

Mendel University in Brno is the oldest independent specialised university in the Czech Republic. It was established as the University of Agriculture in Brno in 1919, and since 2010 it has been using the name Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU). The university proudly bears the name of Johann Gregor Mendel, the founder of modern genetics, who conducted his famous experiments in Brno.

MENDELU is one of the Czech leading educational institutions in the sphere of life sciences. The university offers a wide range of study programmes in English in both traditional and modern fields of study (both in BSc a MA level). The university consists of five faculties – Faculty of AgriSciences, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Horticulture, and Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies. In its modern laboratories academic staff deal not only with crop production and animal breeding but also with food production, agroecology, virtual reality or wood technology. In 2011, the establishment of an independent university institute CEITEC MENDELU within the Faculty of Agronomy incorporated the University into an international scientific centre of excellence, the Central European Institute of Technology.
