The Goethe-Institut together with Alliance Française, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Delegation of the European Union, the Embassy of France, the Embassy of Germany, and the Embassy of Poland host a symposium to share personal recollections of the 9th November 1989.

30 years ago, the Fall of the Berlin Wall shook the world. It was a pivotal moment in history that broke grounds for Berlin’s future, the future of Germany and then rippled through all of Europe and the world. On 9th November 2019, a group of remarkable people from different backgrounds will recollect the moments surrounding that time and share stories from each of their respective points of view. Leading questions for the symposium are: Where were you when the Wall came down? What were your first thoughts? Did you see the Fall coming?

Over 90 Minutes, the panellists will provide a diverse and authentic insight into this important piece of history. In between the shared stories, French pianist Philippe Guilhon will play pieces that are of significance to the era.

The symposium is accompanied by a wide variety of cultural programs offered on the grounds of the Alliance Française, the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut from 15:00 to 21:00 hrs. At the Alliance Française, Luc Citrinot, a tour guide and urban researcher will present his exhibition “Dual Life of Berlin”. The German Embassy will open its gates for visitors to marvel at full-size pieces of the Berlin Wall. The Goethe-Institut presents a selection of documentaries and feature films about the era before concluding the day with the symposium at 18:00 hrs. A Tuk Tuk shuttle service will rotate between these three venues providing smooth transportation for all visitors.
