Holocaust Memorial Event with Peter Finkelgruen

In honor of the international holocaust memorial day which was established by the UN in 2005,
the Czech, German and Israeli embassies in Beijing jointly hold a Holocaust Memorial Event at
the Embassy of the Czech Republic on February 22nd 2017. It is the first time that the three
embassies commemorate the Holocaust together in China.
The event includes a lecture by Mr. Peter Finkelgruen, who will read from his book “Erlkönig’s
empire. The tale of a deception” and other texts. Mr. Finkelgruen was born in Shanghai in 1942
after his parents fled from their native Czechoslovakia to China due to persecution by the Nazi
regime. After the end of the war he lived in Czechoslovakia, Israel and Germany.
With this Holocaust Memorial Event the three embassies make a joint effort in China to further
the historical remembrance of the Holocaust and underline the importance of accepting historical
responsibility, reconciliation and trust between peoples and between states
