What were the Czech Days in the Pearl River Delta Region

The activities of this year’s Czech Days focused on the Pearl River Delta Region in southern China consisting of the Guangdong Province, Fujian, Hainan and the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao. The theme and individual events were prepared by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hongkong and CzechTrade Office in Guangzhou and supported by other partners of the Czech Days. An important theme of the year-round activities was the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia. Therefore, events in the economic field emphasized the history of Czech industry in contrast to today's modern technologies. Other important themes addressed this year have been the Czech culture and design and cooperation in the field of advanced technologies, research and education.

The fourth series of Czech Days was launched in Hong Kong on 4 February during the Hong Kong Education Expo.

During the opening ceremony held on Mach 9 2018 in Guangzhou, the exposition "A. Mucha and the Others", accompanied by the exhibition "Inspired by Mucha: Czech Products inspired by Art Noveau" was launched, introducing the products of Preciosa, Caesar Crystal Bohemiae, Ladislav Ševčík, and Alpine Pro inspired by Alfons Mucha. The event was accompanied by a piano concert of the Czech producer of grand pianos Petrof. At the event, Škoda showcased two latest models, Kodiaq, and Karoq. Lobkowicz, Kolby, Budweiser Budvar, Zubr, Marlenka, and Fromin provided refreshments for the guests. The event was organized by the Czech Embassy in Beijing and the Czech China Chamber of cooperation. The event was supported by the South Moravian Region, Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Guangzhou municipality.

For the first time, Czech companies Jihlavské sklárny Bohemia (Jihlava glassworks Bohemia), Bohemia Treasury, Crystal Bohemia, Crystalite Bohemia, Caesar Crystal Bohemia, Bino Europe, and XKKO exhibited at the Gift and Home Product Fair in Shenzhen, South China on 25-29 April 2018. Participation of Czech companies on the trade fair was organized by the Guangzhou office of CzechTrade in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in China and the Czech China Chamber of cooperation. The main partners were Škoda Auto and Home Credit and other partners of this year's Czech Days such as Huawei, Alpine Pro, Preciosa and Kolby, and Lobkowicz breweries.

The Czech companies ELLA-CS, INOTECH ČR, Linet Group, MZ Liberec, M-Tray and TSE, returned for the second time to the Hong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair on May 7-9, 2018. The companies were supported by the Deputy Minister of Health, Radek Policar, who took part in the Czech seminar and together with General Consul Lucie Nebesarova participating in meetings with partners from the Food and Health Bureau. The Czech participation at the trade fair was made possible by the Economic Diplomacy Project, prepared by the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong as part of the Czech Days in the Perl River Delta region.

The Shenzen Biennale was held in Shenzen on 11 May. The Czech Republic was represented by David Černý’s, artifact the "Thinker," a head/skull made of stainless steel. During the International Poster Festival, the exhibition "Czech and Slovak Poster Exhibition 2018" was launched, focusing on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia, organized by the Brno Biennale Association.

As part of the Czech Days, the Czech film "Kopřiva," directed by Ms. Xie Piaoyu, was screened for the first time to Chinese audience at the LGBT 2018 Film Festival in Guangzhou, South China. After the screening, the director of the film engaged with the audience not only on the movie Kopřiva but also discussed her other LGBT film projects. The event was organized by the Czech Embassy in Beijing in cooperation with the Consulates General of the Netherlands and New Zealand. A total of 15 consulates and embassies participated in the organization of the LGBT 2018 Film Festival. The primary objective of the festival is to highlight the variety of forms of love and relationships.

The Czech Beer and Wine Festival in Hong Kong was attended by representatives of 10 Czech companies - BlueTouch, Budweiser Budvar, Marlenka International, PMS Přerov, Royal Czech Beer, Rudolf Jelínek and Ludwig Winery, Lobkowicz Group Brewery, Karlovarská Becherovka, Pilsner Urquell, Kozel on August 17. The event held as a side-event of the official Czech participation at the FoodExpo 2018, was supported by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Viera Šedivá. The festival was financially supported by the project of economic diplomacy (PROPED).

At the beginning of September, the Czech Republic presented as the partner country of the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) in Xiamen. The motto of the Czech Republic at this year's fair was: Czech Republic, Your Top Investment and Travel Destination in Europe. The Czech Republic presented its investment, tourism and business opportunities for cooperation on the exhibition area of 500m2 through CzechInvest agency, Deloitte Advisory company, and CzechTourism agency. A successful presentation of tourism and business cooperation was also held by the Olomouc Region in the attendance of the delegation led by Deputy Governor Pavel Šoltys. The Czech participation in the CIFIT trade fair was also supported by representatives of the Committee on Economic Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, led by Radim Fiala and other representatives of the Olomouc Region. The two Škoda cars exhibited attracted significant attention as well as the selection of Czech glassmakers including Preciosa Components, Caesar Crystal Bohemiae, Crystalite Bohemia and others. Visitors to the Czech pavilion had the opportunity to taste the excellent Czech beers, Budweiser Budvar and Litovel and the Marlenka cake.

Fourteen universities from the Czech Republic attended the China Education Expo on 20-25 October 2018 held under the auspices of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing and the House of Foreign Cooperation (DZS). The participating universities attended the presentation "Study in the Czech Republic." The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing organized a half-day program including an interactive seminar for Czech universities, a U2B networking event with representatives of educational agencies and a reception in honour of the large delegation of Czech universities. The new application ("Study in the Czech Republic") on the WeChat social network has also been launched, which will make it easier for prospective students to access information on study opportunities in the Czech Republic.

At the beginning of October, Czech aviation celebrated its centenary at the Zhuhai Airshow in China. Companies such as Czech National Aircraft, Shark Aero, the FAIR pilot school and PBS Velká Bíteč, a manufacturer of turbine engines were presented at the Czech National Exposition in Zhuhai this year. Representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, lead by Deputy Minister Jiří Havlíček supported the companies at the fair. The participation of the Czech Republic in Zhuhai Airshow was financially supported by the project of economic diplomacy of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing.

On 23-25 November, the Czech Republic presented as a partner country of the Hainan World Leisure Tourism Expo in Haikou. The exhibition presented the Czech Republic as a tourist destination and selected Czech brands such as Škoda Auto, Crystalite Bohemia, Bohemia Jihlava, Crystal Bohemia Poděbrady, Bohemia Treasury, Caesar Crystal Bohemiae, Lasvit or Preciosa were present. Pilsner Urquell beer was available as a refreshment for visitors. An innovative presentation using extended reality called Czech Innovation Expo was part of the presentation. The brass quartet of the Brno Conservatory took care of the entertainment. Among the accompanying events was the Škoda Auto Roadshow with veteran Škoda Felicia cars and an exhibition marking the centenary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia. The event was supported by a delegation of members of the South Moravian Region Assembly, a partner region of Hainan Province.

Guangzhou Design Week offered the best of Czech art and design on 27-29 November 2018. The products of Lasvit, Preciosa, Petrof, Modernista, Qubus, Krehký, Ton, Koh-i-noor, Royal Dux, Fatra, Dino Toys, My Dvě or the Škoda 422 veteran were introduced at the Czech exposition called "Czech Republic - The Land of Desing" and "The Century of Czech” together with products by designers Tereza Rosalie Kladošová, Míla Fürstová and Linda Vránová. Tereza Rosalie Kladošová met great success reaching the final of the competition “World Youth Designer 2017”. Part of the Czech presentation was also a seminar on Czech design showing the Czech Republic as a country of design. The Czech exhibition could not have been complete without Designblok, Mattoni in cooperation with Míla Fürstová, the traditional Pilsner Urquell beer, a newcomer to the Chinese market or Lahofer South Moravian wine. Visitors were entertained by the brass quartet of the Brno Conservatory by members of the Regional Council of the South Moravian Region, a partner region of Guangdong Province were in attendance. With the support of the Beijing Embassy, representatives of the South Moravian Region engaged in a discussion on possibilities of cooperation with representatives of the province, Pui Ching Middle School and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The Czech Days event series in 2019 will focus on the north-eastern region of China, specifically on the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. These provinces are partners of the South Bohemia, Pardubice and Zlín Regions. Thematically, the events will focus on winter sports, engineering, agriculture, and technology. The event will include the traditional partners of Czech Days, Škoda Auto, Home Credit, Alpine Pro, and many others.

Czech Days are a series of activities focused on selected priority areas of Czech-Chinese cooperation with the aim of promoting the Czech Republic in selected regions. They are linked to top visits from the Czech Republic and presented to key political partners in China, associations, and institutions as well as to key Chinese companies with the intention to strengthen cooperation. The Czech Days event-series is held annually by the Czech Embassy in Beijing and the Czech China Chamber of cooperation in cooperation with partners from the Czech and Chinese government and the corporate sector. The main partners are Škoda Auto, Home Credit, and others.
