Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport visited China

At the end of October, a delegation of members of the Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Parliament of the Czech Republic visited the People’s Republic of China. The delegation, led by Professor Karel Rais (Chairman of the Committee), arrived in Beijing where the delegation met with counterparts at the National People’s Congress of the PRC. The main purpose of this visit was advancing cooperation in the fields of student exchange programs and cooperation among Czech and Chinese Universities. Delegation also visited Liaoning and Sichuan provinces.
 

The delegation consisted of four Deputies and employees of the Chamber of Deputies, Parliament of the Czech Republic. The delegation visited Tsinghua University, where two bilateral Inter-Excellence research projects are currently being conducted focusing on sustainable energy/renewable resources and nano ceramic 3D printers. Both are major projects of bilateral cooperation between the Czech Republic and China. Members of the Committee also paid a visit to Sotio, a Czech biotechnology company operating on the Chinese market in the fields of medication and applied research.

The delegation also attended the National Day reception celebrating Czech Independence Day. The reception, held at the premises of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, was opened by Czech and Chinese national anthems followed by speeches given by the Czech Ambassador Vladimir Tomsik and Professor Karel Rais. The reception was attended by more than 150 guests including diplomatic community, Czech studies teachers and their students, and Chinese business, cultural and sports partners of the Czech Embassy.

In Dalian, the delegation visited the Dalian University of Foreign Languages where a Czech Language Program launched in September 2019. Members of the Parliament participated in the lecture and had a conversation with Chinese students. Following meeting with the Party Secretary, Vice-Rector and Dean emphasized the importance of teaching Czech language in China. The delegation also brought several Czech books and teaching materials for the new Czech Language program. Members of the Parliament then visited an orphanage, where they discussed the challenges of the welfare system and living conditions of children in the orphanage.

In Sichuan, members of the delegation visited three universities – Xihua University, Chengdu University and Sichuan International Studies University, where they had conversations with university leaders about cooperation. In addition to Czech Language Studies, the delegation promoted further cooperation in fields of medicine, sport and applied research.
