The Czech Republic has been Actively Helping in the International Fight Against the Spread of COVID-19

The Czech Republic has been actively contributing to international efforts against the spread of a new type of coronavirus that causes COVID-19. In February and early March, the Czech Republic sent two deliveries of aid to the then most affected China, and was also one of the first countries to contribute to the World Health Organization's program to fight the infection. Contributing to the solidarity between European nations, the Czech Republic provided material assistance to Italy, Spain, Slovenia and Northern Macedonia in March and April. The Czech Republic cooperates with partners in the European Union on repatriation of citizens and is also actively involved in a preparation of a joint EU initiative to provide support to developing countries affected by the pandemic.

In February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic earmarked CZK 10 million from its humanitarian budget, of which CZK 4 million was devoted to assistance for the then most affected China. A delivery of medical supplies arrived directly at the then epicenter of the disease, the Chinese city of Wuhan by a special flight co-financed by the European Commission. In addition to the Czech assistance, help provided by other EU Member States - Austria, Hungary and Slovenia - was delivered on the board of the aircraft. The Czech Republic, as one of the first countries, contributed CZK 6 million to the World Health Organization for its comprehensive response program to COVID-19. This program includes technical support for all affected countries, data collection and research of treatment.

At the beginning of March another shipment of material medical assistance to China, totaling CZK 8 million took place. It contained donations from the Office of the President of the Czech Republic, Czech regions and cities, as well as companies from the Czech Republic. This delivery of aid, which was transported to Beijing by a Czech government special plane, was personally handed over by the Czech Ambassador to China, Mr. Vladimír Tomšík. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing contributed significantly to the implementation of both humanitarian deliveries to China.

It is worth noting that especially during February there was a great wave of solidarity expressed towards China in its fight against the coronavirus by various entities from the Czech Republic. In addition to the assistance provided by several Czech regions and towns, e.g. the Pardubice Region, the Olomouc Region, the South Moravian Region, the Karlovy Vary Region, the Vysočina Region or the City of Olomouc, a public collection held by the town of Třebíč attracted a great response. People from all over the Czech Republic contributed to the collection. The largest Czech companies operating in China, namely Home Credit, SOTIO and Škoda Auto, also took part in the assistance. Czech universities, such as Palacký University, joined the common effort to help China. The Czech community in China, through CzechCham Shanghai, also contributed and donated respirators to doctors in the Yangtze River Delta. A collection to help the affected Wuhan was also organized by the leading Czech football club SK Slavia Praha. Last but not least, a symbolic musical support to Wuhan and China was expressed by the Czech Philharmonic and PETROF grand piano maker.

In March and April, in the context of solidarity within the European Union, the Czech Republic sent assistance to Italy, Spain and Slovenia. The Czech Republic has also been actively cooperating with EU partners on consular assistance and ensuring the return of citizens of EU Member States back to their home countries since the beginning of the crisis in January. In the first half of April, the Czech Republic donated 1 million medical masks to North Macedonia.

The activities of the Czech Republic are fully in accordance with the organization of humanitarian aid of the European Union under the theme Team Europe. A package approved by the European Commission will address vulnerable countries in Africa, the EU neighborhood, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. It is a combination of resources provided by both EU institutions and EU Member States totaling more than € 15.6 billion.

The preparation of a comprehensive joint EU initiative in favor of developing countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on supporting their health capacities as well as mitigating social and economic impacts, takes into account the announced UN global response plan. In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is preparing an initiative across the available humanitarian, stabilization, development and economic instruments, which will primarily focus on priority countries of the Czech Republic's development and humanitarian aid.
