Czech Republic increasingly popular in China: Czech Studies major opens in Tianjin

Every year brings record high numbers of Chinese visitors to the Czech Republic. This year will be no exception. In fact, it should be over 500 thousand tourists from China in 2017. Czech Republic´s popularity among Chinese is not only visible in the field of tourism but also in language studies.

In the past years several new Czech studies undergraduate majors were established at universities around China. The newest member of this “Czech Family” is the Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) where as of September 2017 10 students are studying Czech language. Czech Studies became the 21st language major offered to students at TFSU.

With the commencement of the semester and the new Czech Studies Mr Ondrej Wagner, diplomat responsible for cooperation with universities, visited TFSU during the last week of September and conveyed a message of support to this newly created degree program. During his visit, Mr Wagner gave a presentation about various cultural, historical and political aspects of Czech Republic and had an open discussion with the students. Later, he met with the president of TFSU Mr Xiu Gang and the representatives of the Department of International Cooperation.
