Czechia left a lasting impression at the 2016 Beijing Football European Championship

Just as the upcoming "EURO 2016" championship in France, the French embassy in Beijing organised an inter-embassy football tournament. 16 teams took part that were split into 4 groups. The opening ceremony and kick-off in the first game between France and Romania was administered by the Ambassador of France to China  H.E. Maurice Gourdault-Montage.

The core of our team were players from the Czech Embassy in Beijing and players from "ŠKODA CHINA". The Czech team dominated its group, winning it with an impressive score of 10:2, after beating Ireland 2:1, Italy 4:1 and Belgium 4:0. Apart from a few knocks the players avoided any serious injury, an emergency only arose for a moment during the Belgium game, when our hard-as-a-rock defender Jindřich Hacker ripped his boot. The victorious journey of our team unfortunately came to an abrupt end in the quarterfinals, where the Czech team fought a courageous but ultimately losing battle against tournament favorites France. The players of the French team, inspired by their more famous fellow Frenchmen Ribery, Pogba, Benzema and Griezmann, dominated possession from the start and we only had our own Petr Čech in the form of Vladimír Randáček to thank for keeping a clean sheet in the first half. The Czech team was in fact able to get a goal of its own from a rare counter-attack and so found itself 1:0 up at the break. Right from their first attack in the second half the French team equalised and quickly added an unfortunate second goal. Towards the end of the match the strong French team made it 3:1. The Czech hopes were boosted when Jan Katuščák, a young addition to the squad from FC Klánovice, brought to score back within 1 after dribbling through the whole French team with a goal that reminded the fans of Maradona´s famous goal. The final moment of the game saw the Czech team ´s final push, but the ensuring goal-mouth scramble unfortunately did not bring the desired equalizing goal. All-in-all the Czech team however left a good impression. The joint top scores and also best players of the Czechia with 5 goals each were Sina Almiran from "ŠKODA CHINA" and Jan Katuščák from FC Klánovice.

The Czechs thereby actually mimicked our national ice-hockey team at the hockey world championships, which also enjoyed a strong group stage followed by a disappointing quarterfinal loss. The champions of the whole football tournament in Beijing was the Embassy of Russia.
