On the initiative of CZ PRES and the UN office, an expert round table on food security took place in Beijing on 29 September 2022

In the capacity of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing focused on one of the most pressing problems for many especially developing countries in the world. The food security, negatively influenced for several years by the climate and now-a-days exacerbated by the war against Ukraine with its impacts on world transport and supplies of grain and fertilizers. On 29 September 2022, in cooperation with the UN Office in China, the Round Table in a hybrid face-to-face and online form mapped the initiatives of various development partners as well as the problems perceived by representatives of the most affected developing countries, expert advisors and implementers of projects of aid and development cooperation. The round table discussion has become a kick-off for further practical meetings and cooperation between South-South and South-North in addressing both the immediate prevention of the food crisis and the sustainable development of food sovereignty, which is the basis for the fulfilment of the specific second Sustainable Development Goal, but i salso interconnected with implementation of many other SDGs.

The round table was opened by the UN Resident Coordinator in China H. E. Ambassador Siddharth Chatterjee and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to China H. E. Vladimír Tomšík. In the section in which representatives of the FAO or the UN Regional Office from Bankgkok spoke about the findings of the UN Global Response Group, several major donors presented their existing financial and project initiatives in the field of food security – the European Union (EU Delegation Beijing), the PRC (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs - MARA), the United States of America (for the US Global Food Security Stategy 2022-26), the Beijing based Office for Global Development of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. H. E. Ambassador of Malawi has also presented his contribution to the debate. In the next part, very practical opinions and proposals for more effectiveness of future projects were exchanged not only by panelists (representatives of the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, representatives of the embassies of Norway, Egypt, Sri Lanka and Burundi, or the specialized consulting organization Trivium China) but also by spectators in the hall and online. The aim was – also in connection with the conclusions of the political negotiations on food security just concluded on 77. General Meeting of the UN and before the meetings of the second and other working committees of the UN General Assembly in New York - to strengthen very specific working ties and present the currently available resources. Thanks to this, it will be possible in the coming months to share - in the presence of everyone: development partners, donors and beneficiaries - quite practical knowledge about what specific specifics future bilateral, even three- or multilateral cooperation may encounter, but also about experience on which it can effectively build. With the UN as both a platform and guardian of proven international standards, diplomats along with international and Chinese experts can become an interactive and cooperative part of crisis prevention, human suffering and conflict through such working-level meetings.
