Sustainable future as a main topic of the seminar organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing

Sustainable future is a topic, that affects us all. That is why the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing, together with its long-term partner, Škoda Auto, organized a seminar on this topic. During the event, which took place on March 20, the speakers introduced the participants, consisting of the diplomatic and business community, to the basic aspects of the sustainable future itself and the green transformation associated with it. Green financing, ESG policy and emission reduction were also among topics discussed by the speakers and participants.

At the seminar, Ambassador, H.E. Vladimír Tomšík spoke on behalf of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing. He emphasized the importance of the green transformation from a global point of view and at the same time presented the priorities of the Czech Republic in this regard. The Czech Republic, as part of the EU, supports the Green Deal for Europe and is committed to fulfilling its goals. As part of this effort, the Czech government approved an energy-climate plan at the beginning of 2020, which, among other things, envisages a 22% share of energy from renewable sources in the total energy mix of the Czech Republic by 2030.

Thorsten Jäde, Head of Škoda China, presented the "Green Belt" project of the Volkswagen Group China, which Škoda Auto is a part of. The project‘s main goal between 2021 and 2030 is planting trees in 10 places in northern and northwestern China that are most affected by deforestation and erosion. The first phase of the project took place in April 2021, when the concern planted 850,000 trees in Gansu province in cooperation with volunteers. The total number of trees to be planted by 2030 is 8.5 million, covering total area of 40 million square meters, which is twice the area that the concern uses for its production in China.

After the presentations, the seminar continued with discussion on various topics connected to sustainability. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beijing thus freely followed up on the seminar on "Green financing", which was originally supposed to take place in December, but had to be temporarily postponed due to the anti-pandemic measures in force at the time.
