Meeting with the EU diplomatic corps on the occasion of the beginning of the Czech Presidency of the European Union

On the occasion of the beginning of the Czech presidency in the Council of the European Union, the Czech Ambassador to Lebanon Mr. Jiří Doležel organized on July 1, 2022 at his residence a meeting with the EU diplomatic corps in Lebanon.

The event was attended by resident ambassadors of the EU member states, defence attachés, the ambassador of Ukraine, Switzerland, Great Britain, the Head of the EU Delegation in Lebanon and the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) General Joseph Aoun was the guest of honour.

Ambassador Doležel briefly presented the priorities and goals of the Czech Presidency.

In his speech, General Aoun thanked the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Beirut for their long-term support to the Lebanese army (material aid from the Army of the Czech Republic, humanitarian aid after the explosion in the port of Beirut) and summarized the problems the country has been facing since autumn 2019. He also addressed the issue of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, whose presence poses enormous economic, social, environmental and security challenges. He asked for support for Lebanon in overcoming the crisis and for the support of the Lebanese army, which is currently the only guarantor of stability and security in the country.

A cocktail party followed the speeches. All guests highly appreciated General Aoun's attendance at the event and wished the Czech Republic a successful presidency in the current difficult times.
