Commemoration of fallen RAF pilots

In honor of the fallen Czechoslovak and British pilots the ceremony took place on May 5th 2015 at the military cemetery CWGC – Ypres Town Extension.

Ypres is known mostly as a place connected to the WW I. Less known is the fact, that this is the place where the graves of RAF pilots of the WW II are located including the grave and memorial of the Czechoslovak citizen Karel Pavlík who was shot down on May 5th 1942 during the operation Circus 157. In the same operation another Czechoslovak pilot František Fajtl was shot down, but survived and returned to Great Britain to continue to fight in RAF.

The commemorative event was organized by Mrs. Milena Kolaříková Lock and her husband Chris Lock. Ambassadors of the United Kingdom J.E. Alison Rose and the Czech Republic J.E. Jaroslav Kurfurst assisted at the ceremony. The organizers, col. Filip Borremans of the Belgian Air Force and many others should be thanked for the organization of overflight of two F-16 jet fighters over the cemetery.

More information about the operation Circus 157 including the stories of the two Czechoslovak pilots who were shot down over the Belgian territory.
