Visa-free foreigners

So-called visa-free foreigners (citizens of these countries) are exempted from the visa requirement to enter the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days in any period of 180 days. After the expiry of these 90 days of continuous stay, these foreigners are obliged to leave the Schengen area. The fact that they apply for the relevant residence permit in the meantime, i.e. within these 90 days, does not entitle them to a longer (legal) stay in the Schengen area. Until the residence permit is issued, these foreigners would be staying in the Schengen area without any residence permit, thus illegally.
