Ambassador meets with Senate´s Foreign Committee Chairman

On 21 May 2013, Ambassador Jiří Šitler met with Chairman of the Senate´s Foreign Committee Petru Filip and Secretary of the Committee Ben-Oni Ardelean.

The Ambassador thanked Petru Filip for his hospitality during the recent visit by the Committee on EU Affairs of the Senate of Parliament of the Czech Republic and for his participation in the event to mark the anniversary of the birth of the Czech and Slovak Republic. The two sides share similar views on numerous European issues. The Chairman of the Committee appreciated the Czech Republic´s permanent support for Romania´s accession to the Schengen area. They discussed also a common history which should be appropriately commemorated also during the visit by the President of the Senate of Parliament of the Czech Republic in September this year. It is 75 years since the Munich Agreement and 45 years since the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Treaty armies, in which Romania then refused to take part. Projects to mark even deeper historical connections were also discussed, such as Transhumance, continuing the tradition of pastoralism in the Carpathian region, and a conference to commemorate the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia.
