Ambassador visits the city of Râmnicu Sarat

On 6 September 2013, Ambassador Jiří Šitler visited a former prison in the city of Râmnicu Sarat, where he got acquainted with a future project of a Memorial of the Victims of Communism. He also had talks with the highest city representatives.

On the invitation of the IICCMER (The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile) Ambassador visited a former prison in the city of Râmnicu Sarat in the County of Buzau, where he recalled destinies of political prisoners of the communist regime, who suffered here and some have also died, and got acquainted with the project of a Memorial of the Victims of Communism.

On the same day Ambassador had talks with the city representatives and management on potential cooperation between the Czech Republic and the city. Among others, there were indicated opportunities for participation of Czech artists at a local folk festival, holding exhibitions and a local business community participating at the Czech-Romanian economic forums organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bucharest.

Romanian media paid a great deal of attention to the visit in the light of an anticipated trial with a former prison commander, Ambassador gave interviews e.g. to Radio Romania, to several TV stations including a state TVR (Televiziunea Romana) and a Romanian press agency Agerpres.
