(This article expired 27.10.2021.)

On 23 October 2011 the Elisabeta Palace Evening dedicated to the Czech Republic took place on the occasion of the ceremony of granting the Honorary Citizenship of the City of Kroměříž to the King. The ceremony to mark King Michael´s 90th birthday (October 25) was the expression of gratitude for his contribution to the liberation of the city by the Romanian army during the World War II.

Mayor of the City of Kroměříž Daniela Hebnarova thanked King Mihai for the liberation of the city in 1945 and stressed that the King of Romania had become a symbol of freedom for the people of Kroměříž. Ambassador Jiří Šitler in his speech underlined that the King´s decision to end the Fascist regime in August 1944 had saved lives of many Jews and Roma – some of the survivors being present as special guests in Elisabeta Palace.
