Commemoration of Czech volunteers killed in World War I

On 11 November 2021, the Czech Ambassador to Romania, H. E. Ms Halka Kaiserová, paid tribute to the Czech volunteers in the Serbian army who died in the First World War during the fighting in Dobrudja between 7 September and 27 October 1916.

The commemorative act at the memorial to the fallen soldiers in the town of Medgidia was attended by the Ambassador of Serbia to Romania, the Mayor of Medgidia and the commander of the local garrison with an honorary military unit and music. Ambassador Kaiserová recalled the history of the formation of the volunteer division in Odesa, which was joined by a thousand Czechs, their combat deployment in the area between Bucharest and the Black Sea and the Czech heroes of these battles.

Ambassador Kaiserová laid wreaths at the memorial to the Battle of Dobrudja, the memorial to the fallen Czech soldiers and the memorial to the fallen Scottish nurses. The Romanian Air Force also honoured the heroes of the First World War in Dobrudja by flying fighter jets over the memorial site.
