700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV

On 12 May 2016, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bucharest in cooperation with the Czech Center organized a memorial event on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor.
 

The most important Czech scholar in Romania, Prof. Anca Irina Ionescu, mentioned the main events in Charles IV’s life, his importance for the lands of the Bohemian Crown, his Pan-European dimension and that he ordered St. George’s equestrian statue for Prague Castle to a workshop in Cluj.

A prominent Romanian historian Daniel Constantin Barbu also stressed in his presentation Charles IV’s historical importance. The guest of honor of the meeting Prof. Jiří Felix, the most important Romanian scholar in the Czech Republic, mentioned the Romanian language teaching at Charles University since 1882. A major Romanian film critic Mircea Dan Duţă presented Charles IV’s figure in film.

Former Romanian president Ion Iliescu also attended the event and mentioned in his speech Charles IV’s influence on Czech culture and the personalities of The Prague Spring (1968) he met and cooperated with.

The memorial evening was attended by approximately 60 guests and was covered with great interest by local media.
